Downsizing Days

Remember packing up your dorm room after a year of collage?

I remember those days quite vividly! (I had three such days)

TIP: Don't EVER try and pack hangers!!! Just go buy some new one!! Hangers are by FAR the most annoying items to try and cram into a storage box! They take up an incredible amount of space. If you know a good way to pack hangers PLEASE comment below and share!

Anyway....

Packing up my dorm room was NOTHING compared to going through my room in preparation for married life.

80% more involved!

What to get rid of what not to get rid of, THAT is the question.

Here are some of my first hand tips for downsizing:

THINK PRACTICALLY - but not SO “practical” that you don’t keep any “just because” items. I’m keeping some dressy dresses just for fun occasions!

THINK: How often have I actually used this? - Throw out those things you never use.

Don’t keep EVERYTHING you MAY need someday. If you can’t think of a use for it right now…throw it out. I’m saving old jeans and tee-shirts because I plan on making quilts out of them.

Throw out the nick-nacks that don’t hold special meaning - such as, save the treasures that belonged to your grandmother, throw out those trinkets that you acquired over the years because they went along with the theme of your room.

KEEP SOME TREASURES FOR YOUR KIDS - When I was growing up I LOVED horses (still do) and I began to collect horse figurines. Well, I found out that my mom had also. She had kept one of her Breyer horses but had given the rest away when she got married. As a little girl, how I wished I could have had the horses that belonged to my mommy!

As I began cleaning out my room, this childhood memory came back to surface....

My parents have graciously offered to store some stuff for me that I would like to keep for later on. So I've chosen a few things that I will stash away for my children to enjoy someday

BOOKS!!!! Downsize on Books Books take up a ton of room and are heavy!!

FIRST OF ALL: make a list of your books and give it your fiancĂ©. Get rid of any double                     copies.

Keep books with information that you will want to refer to in the future.

Keep some of your good children's books for your kids someday (again, IF you have a   place to   store them).

Check into making some extra spending money on those you decide not to keep.
o   Are they worth anything? Do you have any expensive text books?
o   What are they going for?
o   Is what you are going to get for them worth the time and effort? Don’t forget to figure in shipping cost.
o   Set up an account on E-Bay or CraigsList (it might be nice to have those account in the future anyway).

If you can give something away, DO IT!!

"It is more blessed to give than to receive." - Acts 20:35b

DON'T STRESS!!! Enjoy the present season and cherish the time with your family!

Do any of you have a downsizing tips to share?
