When we purchased our little house on wheels the back room
had bunks and a tiny cabinet. With only Jael we did not need the use of the
bunks and decided to take them out to make better use of the space.
When J pulled the bunks out it exposed rot in the corner of
the trailer. BUMMER!
So J set to work
pulling up the flooring, replacing the floor insulation and put down new
sub-flooring.
The room became our “catch-all” as we got situated in this
new living arrangement.
Piece by piece things were added or taken out. I did not have to dry clothes on the curtain bars after J
set up my clothes line and J built a shelf which was tremendously helpful in organizing
all the “this and thats” of our life!
One day in April my childhood best friend called to tell me she
was hoping to come out for a visit! I was super excited, as she lives half way
across the USA and visits are few and far between.
This got me thinking…I wanted her to stay with us!
With a little TLC we could make the back room into a place
for her!
We needed to finish the floor, figure out a door situation
and I desperately wanted to paint the walls! Now I had an excuse to get it
done! Not that I needed an excuse I just needed to get the project higher on my
priority list!
So a few days before Sarah arrived we delved into the
project full force!
There were some big holes in the walls from where the bunks
had been secured, so J patched those up for me and I began painting!
J had been wanting to make a hat/coat rack for quite a while
now so he disappeared and came back a while later with this sweet rack!
I love it!!!
After the walls were painted J put down snap together “wood”
flooring!
We put down a mattress and found a piece of material to made
a temporary curtain for privacy
.
We were ready for our first over night guest!
What a transformation a little paint and some second-hand
flooring will do to a little space!
My favorite part was not about the room but about the person
who stayed in the room!
Sarah and I grew up like sisters and she fit right into our
tiny trailer life! We were able to spend almost a week together visiting; we
went out to eat, got coffee and cheese cake at an old bank redone into a coffee
house, explored old back roads, went on an 8 mile bike ride( *pain* but so
worth it), stayed up LATE every night and ate WAY too much icecream! I am so
thankful for her friendship!
TRANSFORMATION #2
From day one of our tiny trailer life we have been planning
on making the back room into a place for Jael.
Now that the room was fixed up we could get serious about
moving Jael out of our bedroom into her own little space.
It was kind of strange to think about…she had ALWAYS slept
in our room, but she is almost 7 months old and it was time to move forward.
All we needed was to set up her pack and play bed and take
the big step.
I knew it could be a rough transition but I also knew that
the longer we waited the harder it would be on all of us.
On Friday we set up her new bed and she had her naps in it
that day. That went pretty well!
Then bedtime came....
We laid her down with all her familiar blankets and smells
and to our surprise she went right to sleep without a peep.
However, that was short lived…
She woke up several times during the night (including an
hour long stretch). We spent time looking around the room to assure her that
she was still in her own little house and that we were not far away.
Saturday night was a bit tougher getting to sleep the
initial time but woke up only once, very briefly, then slept till 6:00!
WAY TO GO LITTLE GIRL!
It is nice for J and I to have our room back to ourselves
and Jael seems to love playing in her own room throughout the day!
Jael will be back this weekend to post about her
accomplishments this past month!
Can’t believe she is going to be 7 months old in a matter of
days!
Oh it is such a joy to be a parent!
I would love to hear how others have transitioned their kids
into their own rooms! Please feel free to leave a tip of comment!
